Injection Mold Tool Design for Manufacturability

A mold does much more than shape plastic. It also affects filling, cooling, cycle time, and part size. For medical parts, mold design needs to be done carefully from the beginning.

The key question is simple: can this part be molded in a stable and practical way? To answer that, you need to look at wall thickness, draft angle, gate position, parting line, venting, ejection, cooling, and material flow.

If these points are not handled well, problems will show up later in production. You may see short shots, flash, warpage, sink marks, or unstable dimensions.

A good mold should not only make parts. It should make good parts again and again, without needing very narrow machine settings. That is especially important in medical molding, where stable production matters a lot.

DFM means design for manufacturability. In simple words, it means checking whether the part design is easy to mold before the tool is made.

Insert Molding and Other Special Molding Methods

Insert molding is used when metal parts or other components need to be molded together with plastic. This is common in medical products that need extra strength, conductivity, or a more stable assembly.

It can help reduce assembly steps, improve position accuracy, and lower part count. In some cases, it also makes the product stronger and more compact.

But insert molding is not easy work. The insert must be placed correctly. The molding process must stay stable. The bond between the insert and plastic also needs to be checked carefully.

Besides insert molding, some medical projects also use overmolding, micro molding, or multi-material molding. These methods are useful for soft-touch areas, sealing features, very small parts, or products with more than one material.
